So it’s been a little over a week in Gulu and I can honestly
say I love this city. Today was the second day of my internship at St. Jude’s.
My classmate, Hannah, and I use bikes as our mode of transport since it is out
of town. Today was our first day on the bikes and I felt like I was riding on the
surface on the sun (I’m on the equator so my dramatics are necessary.) It’s a
few miles each way, but that isn’t the bad part. Most of our route is in a more
rural area out of town and there are so many bumps and ditches we spent most of
the ride bracing ourselves from falling. I feel like I’m making this to seem
like hell but besides a few bumps (literally) it was actually so much fun!!
Some of the locals would snicker as we rode past and others would say,
“bazungas!!” (Meaning white person, foreigner.) After arriving at the orphanage
we met with Julius, one of the directors, and he told us that we would be
working in the nursery school in the morning and the special needs in the
afternoon. At recess the children literally bombard you. It’s like extreme
wrestle mania. We also attempted to jump rope but with about 100 children under
7 that lasted for approx.. 4.9 seconds until the rope was broken and someone
was crying. Someone is always crying.
I’m excited to see what my time at St. Jude’s will teach me.
Tomorrow Hannah and I are planning on ditching our bikes taking bota botas
(motorcycles) to give our legs some recovery time (Sorry Mom & Dad!) Now time for lecturesssss!
